Get expert tips on how to choose the right shade of Salonist hair color from Vidal Sassoon Atelier Colorist Stuart Ross.
NEW Vidal Sassoon Salonist hair color treats roots then lengths separately, as done in salons, for seamlessly blended color full of depth and tones. It’s more than color. It’s a work of art.
Q: How do I select my Salonist shade?
A: The most important thing to remember when selecting your Salonist shade is that everyone’s hair reacts to color differently – and your starting color is a big part of that. Two people who use the same color will see different results.
If you’ve never colored your hair, or if it’s been longer than 6 months, we recommend you lighten or darken your natural shade within 2 levels.
If your hair is currently colored darker than your natural shade, you have to be careful to avoid off-tones. You can still go up to 2 levels darker, but we would recommend you only take your hair 1 level lighter.
We recommend only going 2 levels darker, whether or not you’ve colored before. You can go darker than 2 levels, but it will be very difficult to lighten in the future.
Each box of color has a name and number on it that will help you understand more about the shade you’re selecting. The number before the slash indicates the level of hair color, with 1 being the darkest (black), and 10 being the lightest (blonde).
The number or numbers after the slash indicates the tone. 1s are cooler, 3s are warmer, and 0s are neutral. A superscript means you have an intense shade.
The more gray you have, the more neutral your shade should be. Look for the zero after the slash to help with better gray coverage. And take care to avoid shades with a superscript.
