Vera Ellen Wang was born and raised in New York City and is of Chinese descent. She began figure skating at the age of six.

She was an editor at Vogue for seventeen years and Ralph Lauren design director for two years, despite having no formal design training.

In 1990, she opened her own design salon in teh Carlyle Hotel in New York that features her trademark bridal gowns. She has made wedding gowns for many well-known public figures such as Chelsea Clinton,  celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, actresses such as Sharon Stone, and socialites such as Kim Kardashian.
