Description

There was vanilla in the pod and rose in May. Fresh citrus fruit and warm amber. The discovery of a perfume that opens us up to ourselves and yet casts a captivating spell…
As we know, Shalimar appeared in 1925 (although it was created five years earlier by Jacques Guerlain). What is less well known is that it was exclusively launched in the United States following the unexpected success encountered on board the Normandie cruise liner during a crossing to New York by Raymond Guerlain and his extremely beautiful wife. The latter, who was testing the scent, caused a sensation. All the gentlemen turned to follow her lingering scent, while the ladies all wanted to know where they could find it. Even the ship’s orchestra added to the enthusiasm by composing a song entitled… Shalimar.
This infatuation has never waned. A legendary object, Shalimar is an adventure that is continually being reborn. As deep and seductive as ever, it is the absolute archetype of a fragrance that only discloses its secrets to those willing to lose themselves in it…
Today, however, Guerlain is offering a new gateway into this original enchantment for those who are too young to remember. An olfactory and emotional legacy, a ritual allowing them to appropriate their heritage.

Weakest points

Summary
I've recently bot a whole set of Guerlains miniature perfumes and have already discovered new favourites, one of them surprisingly appeared to be Shalimar. The origins of fragrance dates back to the late 20ies of XX century and it definitely carries some aura of that time. It is oriental (like Egyptian oils), powdery, very reminiscent of the old perfumes, yet it uncovers in a different fashion once applied. I bet that my favourite bergamot, which I can smell in Shalimar, has done a trick for me (in terms of liking the perfume). The scent stays long into the evening and is not overpowering but rather remains subtle. Even its vanilla notes somehow go nice in the overall mix.
I can recommend this fragrance to women aged 30+ at least; it is a perfume with a character so to say and will not do for teens, as well as to people who favour oriental scents.

Strongest points
Good projection and longevity.
Weakest points
Initially too sweet
Summary
Shalimar Parfum Initial as introduced in 2011 and was created by Thierry Wasser. Thierry was also responsible for Kylie Minogue's Darling and for Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire. Shalimar itself was first produced in 1925 and for me has a far nicer bottle.

Initial has Bergamot, orange and green top notes. Fruity, Rose, Jasmine and Iris mid notes. And Patchouli, Vetiver, Vanilla, Tonka bean and White musk low notes. It's very fruity and very sweet and initially somewhat overpowering. In particular the vanilla of the mid note dominates quickly but there is a deeper and darker projection from the base note which eventually holds off the sweetness. This does have very good projection and longevity but the balance is less assured than it should be. Overall an interesting and powerful scent but somehow I'm not quite convinced.

Summary
This is/ was a firm favourite of my mother-in-law who, for a long while, absolutely refused to wear anything else. I have tried this perfume myself and it is well suited to my tastes. The top notes are very citrus and the base notes are warming with amber and vanilla. I admit it is a very intoxicating and confident scent. I adore the bottle that has that distinctive Eastern design which is very indicative to the fragrance. The name 'Shalimar' conjures up exotic far flung places. This is strong perfume, but not in the overpowering sense. It is more that it means that you would expect the wearer to be strong and confident but perfectly feminine. A really lovely fragrance
