E:20/09/15, Win 1 x Prada Luna Rossa Eau de Toilette Gift Set | 50ml, RRP £49.99

This month we are offering our members a chance to win a luxurious Prada Luna Rossa Eau de Toilette 50ml Gift Set for Men worth RRP £49.99, beautifully presented in a sleek gift box displaying the iconic red Prada stripe and containing a fragrance and a shower gel.

The story behind the fragance

Luna Rossa is inspired by the infamous 'Luna Rossa' boat created in 1997 for the America's Cup.

"I decided to call the boat Luna Rossa one evening over dinner under a full moon. The name has a kind of magic feeling related to the winners of the America Cup." Patrizio Bertelli, 1997.

Looking to the values at the heart of extreme sailing as a starting point for new ideas, Prada's new masculine fragrance evolved from the pursuit of excellence. Taking the esteemed Luna Rossa name as it's own, it is a scent with a reverence for the natural world and a passion for innovation. Designed by Yves Behar, the Prada Luna Rossa fragrance bottle is inspired by the technological and sleek dynamic beauty of extreme sailing boats.

Prada Luna Rossa EDT for Men, 50ml RRP £47.50

Prada Luna Rossa is a masculine fragrance that reinterprets traditional ingredients with agility. The backbone of the fragrance is lavender - an unmistakable natural ingredient in perfumery - teamed with a bitter freshness of orange essence, resulting in a fresh and invigorating scent. Aromatic clary sage and spearmint nanah essences channel the spirit of vast open spaces and rugged, natural elements whilst ambroxan and ambrette absolute create a woody amber- like signature - the dynamic paradox of synthetic and natural ingredients brings a warm sensuality: refined, dignified and timeless.

Prada Luna Rossa Shower Gel, 100ml RRP £26.50

Get an intensely refreshing shower experience with the Prada Luna Rossa Shower Gel, a deep cleansing scented body wash for men. Infused with moisturising ingredients and gentle cleansing agents, this invigorating shower gel works to eradicate daily pollutants while ensuring perfect tolerance for the skin. The body is left feeling supple and smooth, and is scented with the intensely fresh aroma of Prada Luna Rossa EDT for men.

Two Vaseline Men Compressed Deodorants (+2 To Compare!)

I was lucky enough to be chosen to test two of the Vaseline Men compressed deodorants:

They come from a BzzAgent trial and to quote from their website:

"Compressed deodorants deliver the same protection, but due to an innovative new spray system they require less gas in each spray. With less gas needed, the can is smaller but still contains the same amount of deodorant. That means it will last just as long as your normal can, even in the smaller size. As well as small cans being more convenient for you, they are also significantly better for the environment, Compressed deodorants use, on average, 50% less gas and approximately 25% less aluminium than normal."

I was interested in trying them because I currently use two roller ball deodorants (one for the gym and one for everyday) partially because the spray deodorants are just too tall to easily use, especially at the gym. Below are a couple of pictures showing you the comparison between my current products and the compressed ones (home and the gym):

Okay so the roller ball products as still shorter but the Vaseline products are pretty close.

Vaseline Men Active Dry Compressed Antiperspirant

You can see the product page for this one here. This is the product I use at the gym and so far it's been simple to use and easy to carry around in my gym bag but... in comparison to my current product I'm not getting the 48 hour deodorant impact I'm used to. Within 24 hours the products are pretty similar but I definitely feel that the Vaseline on isn't as effective longer term.

On the positive side the spray doesn't sting and it's easy to get focus the spray in the right place. Overall I'm in two minds as I like the ease of use but I'm used to more longevity and impact.

003

Vaseline Men Double Invisible Compressed Antiperspirant

The product page is here. This one I've been using every morning as my "going to work" product. I'm always cautious with white marks on my work shirts and I've never found an issue with the Vaseline product but it's even less reliable than the Active Dry version in terms of 48 hour (or realistically 12 hours) deodorising or antiperspirant properties.

Easy to use and it doesn't sting but I wouldn't really want to use it as my primary deodorant antiperspirant.

Overall

I actually liked the idea of both of these as I do like spray antiperspirants and they are definitely easier to use (especially in the confined space of the gym) but I just couldn't rely on them and I'll be returning to my old products.

Three Electric Razors, a Manual Razor and a Styler

This is going to be a slightly strange mix and match trial of the various razors I use plus the styler which I've never tried before. The three electric razors' usage (I'll explain why three later) range in age from five years to a few months. Then there is a manual razor for comparison and the Gillette Styler that I'll be trying for the first time.

Braun Series 7 Shaver

The picture is off the latest one but mine doesn't have the fancy self clean system or the display. However, it features exactly the same cutter block and foil. This is the most expensive razor in the test and will set you back nearly £300.00 with the replacement cutter block/foil costing you £34.00.

Braun - Series 7 - 01

So why this one given the price?

I use this as my main everyday shaver and I really like the way it works. There are two settings: Sensitive and Intensive. I use the sensitive mode but I really don't know what the other one actually changes, except the noise. It's clearly less harsh on my skin but it still produces as good a shave. This shaver is very easy to use and feels good in the hand. You can clean it under the tap but it isn't waterproof (look at the Braun Series 3 - 380 Wet and Dry Electric Shaver next for that).

The trimmer isn't very good as it's not too easy to use and it's harsh. Even after a few years I can still get a week out of the razor before I have to recharge it.

The cutter block and the foil are a single unit for this razor which means that you have to replace both at the same time. The razor reminds you when you need to do this (about 18 months) and also tells you if they need a clean. None of this is perfect but it's pretty reliable.

Overall, it's a great workhorse razor. Expensive at full price but it's often at half price in Boots and other stores.

Braun Series 3 - 380 Wet and Dry Electric Shaver

This is the newest one I have and it costs about £140.00, with the replacement cassette costing about £26.00.

"Thanks to the improved Triple Action FreeFloat System, increased motor speed and new SensoFoil, the Braun Series 3 - 380 Wet and Dry Shaver not only delivers better shaving but it can even be used in the shower and with foams and gels."

Braun - 308 - 01

I needed another razor as I travel frequently and I also wanted something that wasn't as expensive as the Braun Series 7 Shaver but still good. I happened to see this one in Boots for half price and fancied the idea of a razor that could be used in a shower.

In comparison to the Series 7, this one is definitely less solid, both in feel and in reality. However it's quite good in use. Again there are two settings: One for a sensitive shave, and another for a more intensive shave. This time it's very easy to notice the difference between the two as the shave is not the same. Unlike the Series 7, the results are okay rather than good, but it's perfectly adequate.

The option to use the razor in the shower with shave foam is very nice, and a good alternative, but in reality I've never seemed to get a good result that way. Update: in the shower this is true but... if you use this razor with shave foam infront a mirror like a normal razor it works really well. I've definitely changed my mind on this one.

Again the foil and cutter block are one unit and are replaced together. The razor reminds you when to change the unit, but I haven't had it long enough to know how long it will last. Once again the trimmer is again not very easy to use and a little harsh, but wider and better than the Series 7 one.

A good razor but not as effective as the Series 7.

Braun Pocket Go Shaver P-60

This one is the oldest shaver I have and it's probably been upgraded a few times by better models. The most recent version is called the Braun Mobile M90 Electric Shaver and costs £18.00. It has the following advantages:

"The Braun Mobile Shaver M90 now comes complete with Braun’s trademark SmartFoil™ Technology, meaning it’s even easier for men to stay smooth on the move. This stylish grooming accessory is fully washable under running water for ultimate convenience. It fits in every pocket, making it perfect for quick touch-ups on the go."

Front

Back

I originally used this one to travel with as it's small and inexpensive. It's battery operated (two AA's) and it lasts well enough over a few days but definitely doesn't last a week without replacing them. The shave is actually quite effective and because the foil is very narrow the shave is precise and the razor is easy to use. The foil and cutter block are separate and can be replaced independently, but you have to remember yourself whether they need to be changed.

Good for an emergency or when you need to carry something small and not too valuable, but overall not the best.

As we have Braun and Gillette I thought we should add a Wilkinson Sword manual razor.

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Razor

"Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 razor's exclusive Hydrating Gel Reservoir releases water-activated gel that hydrates skin as you shave, and our 5 Ultra Glide Blades contain built-in Skin Guards that act to smooth your skin as you shave and reduce irritation."

I'm not one for wet shaving as I find that my skin reacts very badly (basically I get terrible rashes), but after a while I find that an electric shave leaves a stubborn amount of bristle that only a wet shave can reach. This razor is more subtle than others and the five blades really seem to give a close shave but without too much skin irritation. The handle is easy to hold and use and overall this one works well.

Gillette Fusion Proglide Styler Razor

"Gillette Fusion Proglide Styler Razor - whatever facial hair style you choose, whether it’s a simple goatee, a thin chinstrap, or a clean shave with sharp sideburns, you’ll be able to master your best look, even in the shower. The Gillette Fusion Proglide Styler Razor is watertight and totally safe to use in wet environments.

Its Braun-engineered Power Trimmer is designed for ultimate maneuverability and effortless, even trimming. No matter what the angle, the three exchangeable combs adapt to your contours and keep trimming length consistent. And with the ergonomic handle, grip and control are guaranteed from start to finish. Once you’re done, all you have to do is open the trimmer’s door and easily rinse it under a stream of water.

When it comes to shaving, the head fitted with thinner, finer Fusion ProGlide Power Blade gives you Gillette’s closest, most comfortable shave. And its innovative Microcomb guides hair to the blade so you can get against the grain closeness, effortlessly.

On the back of the cartridge you can find the Precision Edging Blade. It gives you the ability to make crisp, defined lines and finishing touches. That’s the precision you need to master your facial hair style like a pro.

All Gillette Fusion Proglide Styler Razor components come packaged together in an organiser case, so your styling tools are always on hand."

Gillette - 03 - razor

As you can see, the Gillette Styler, with its razor fitting next to the Wilkinson Sword manual razor, is larger and looks a little clumsy but actually it feels fine in the hand though, it is a little longer than you're used to.

The next pictures how the Gillette Styler with one of the combs in place and how it looks at the back.

Gillette - 05 - front and back

And these are the three combs that come with it.

Gillette - 04 - combs

The trimmer is much better than the ones on the razors, much more precise and easy to use. It's much less harsh and doesn't cut your skin. The razor version isn't particularly easy to use, though the Gillette blades are very good. I haven't had opportunity to use the styler and, to be honest, I'm not sure I have enough hair to really give it a good trial.

5 Days with Vaseline Men Body Lotion Fast Absorbing

Usually I don’t log my trials this closely but I thought that it might be (semi!) interesting to follow a trial over a few days and to record the different ways that I get to try out these products. This one was a week at home rather than a working week as that really would be dull (commute, work, commute) so most of it is spent in the garden, at the gym, cleaning and cooking.

Day 1

Okay from the video you can see that Vaseline Men Body Lotion is very (very) liquid; it’s almost a milk and so it’s very easy to over use. This is a pity as you don’t need that much as it covers easily and absorbs very quickly.

For my first test I used it after my shower following a long back breaking day digging stones out of the garden (seriously where do they all come from!). You can see in the pictures and the video that I’ve poured the samples (well some of them anyway) into a small pot. I do this for some very practical reasons (taking it to the gym and on holiday, being careful about how much I use, not cluttering the bathroom up with bottles) and one very daft reason: I can never open sachets without scissors! If it was me, a dessert island and a packet of nuts (but no scissors) I’m not sure I’d survive.

The one you can see is from Muji and I use these because I found that the lids don’t break and they’re pretty secure whilst not being too expensive (£1.75 for a 30g Cream Pot). As you can see from the video the lotion isn’t easy to handle from my pot because it’s very light but that’s my fault rather than the products.

The scent is very recognisable as Vaseline but there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s light and not sweet or feminine which makes it ideal for the gym as well as home. In use a finger end of lotion which is enough for an arm. You do feel it on the skin even though it does absorb quickly and for me it left a slightly cold feeling not unpleasant but noticeable. The scent lingers after use (again not unpleasant but noticeable) and even using tiny amounts I felt that my skin was slight damp even a few minutes after use.

Straight from the shower it works well and it certainly helped me feel better after a long day digging up rocks!

Day 2

Today I walked to the gym to test Vaseline Men Body Lotion after a workout session and in the cramped conditions of the changing room. It’s not uncommon for men to use moisturiser at the gym (whether they’d admit to it is another issue) but certainly Vaseline packaging makes it more male friendly and therefore more likely to be added to the kit bag.

I had the same issue as yesterday in that the lotion is so light that it can be hard not to overuse it. This is worse at the gym where you don’t have the time or space to do things in a more measured way. Despite a little spillage (a disadvantage of the lotion being decanted into the pot) it was again easy to apply and absorbed pretty well even after a couple of hours in the gym and then the steam room. It certainly felt good on my skin and helped settle down my skin for the walk home.

Day 3

Back to the garden and a long walk to do some shopping (actually I didn’t buy anything which is always a good result for me). I’ve been wondering how the lotion would handle the amount of time I spend outside in the sun. Between cycling, walking and gardening I probably get too much direct sun on my arms and neck so I usually use something with SPF and do quite a lot of moisturising. After three days of using Vaseline Men Body Lotion I must admit my skin is holding up pretty well. When I test it the skin is actually well moisturised and feels smooth but for some reason my mind keeps telling me that my skin looks dry. I think this is just me getting used to the differences between my usual moisturiser and this one.

Day 4

The weekend so it’s everyday shopping, cooking and cleaning – well there was a bit of gardening first thing! After four days I’m getting used to the lightness of the lotion (far fewer spills) and overall I rather like how it feels on my skin. I still have a strange dislocation between how the skin feels to touch and how it feels in my mind but the reality is that it absorbs and works well.

Day 5

Nothing too strenuous today, shopping, cooking and a few trips to the tip (the result of gardening always seems to be more trips to the tip!). So how have the five days of using Vaseline Men Body Lotion gone and how does my skin feel? Well I can’t say that I can see any difference but given the hard pressure I put my skin under (too many hours in the sun, sweating at the gym and grimy from digging in the garden) I must admit that it feels better than when I use my usual moisturiser. There is still a slight nagging feel of coolness in the skin, not a bad thing but a little too noticeable. I’d probably get used to it after a while but it does seem to sit a little too much at the forefront of my mind.

Overall

I rather enjoyed using this lotion and it definitely made a change to my normal one which is much thicker and doesn’t absorb as well. I haven’t tried the retail bottled version so I don’t know what it would be like to use that but it’s too liquid to use in a gym setting easily in my small tub. I think it would be a great alternative and it would interesting to try the other products in the range.
