Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008), one of the greatest names in fashion history
- In 1953, at 17, Yves Saint Laurent was hired as a couturier by Christian Dior. - In 1957, he found himself at the age of 21 the head designer of the House of Dior. - In spring 1958, his first collection catapulted him to international stardom but his later collections featuring hobble skirts and fashions were savaged by the press and in 1960 he had been fired by Dior. - Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent is one of the great fashion names of the 20th century. - During the 1960s and 1970s, his firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look; safari jackets for men and women; tight pants; tall, thigh-high boots; and arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, the Le Smoking. He also started mainstreaming the idea of wearing silhouettes from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s.
