My Weleda Insight Day Experience 2014

This week I was lucky enough to be invited to a Weleda Insight Day. We were asked to arrive by 9.30 and as everyone was gradually arriving from paces as far away as Northern Ireland, London and so on we were offered a drink and biscuits. The drinks ranged from delicious organic cordials , fresh filtered water and a range of organic fruit and herb teas as well as the usual tea and coffee.

Once everyone was there we had a short introduction before we were taken by mini bus to the thirteen acre organic and biodynamic gardens about a mile from the main Weleda buildings. This site is in Ilkeston in Derbyshire and is the pharmaceutical side of Weleda. They don't make any of the skin care products here , only the medicinal stuff.

We were given a tour of the gardens by the ex head gardener at Weleda who had been there thirty years. He was fascinating and told us so much about the work of Rudolph Steiner, the founder of Weleda. Steiner observed the plants and they way they grew and from these observations and studies he developed his medicines, both homeopathic and for general use.

Every product made by Weleda is created using their philosophy “ In harmony with nature and the human being”.

So not only are the medicines made this way but also all their skin and beauty products too. There is nothing in any Weleda product that does not have a job to do. There is no padding or bulking out with unnecessary scents or perfumes. Every single Weleda product is 100% natural, there are no parabens or other synthetic preservatives, no colourants, no mineral oil derivatives and ever since they were founded Weleda has never tested on animals other than will human volunteers.

After our tour of the garden we went into a marquee where the current head gardener showed us ,with the help of a couple of volunteers, how they made the tinctures for the calendula through using the fresh maceration method. Our volunteers had to chop up a weighed amount of calendula plant, the whole plant minus the root. This chopped mixture had a very specific amount of plant based ethanol added to it. They weigh the calendula, work out its moisture content and the ethanol added is based on that calculation.

This mix is then allowed to sit for a fortnight before being pressed and strained. The resulting tincture can then be stored for up to five years until needed for whatever medicine or product requires that tincture. The ethanol is the natural preservative.

Having made our tincture we were then transported back to the Weleda base for a really lovely lunch. It was a bit like a posh afternoon tea with mini sandwiches, a tasty salad, strawberries dipped in chocolate and some cakes and scones.

Then came the second fun part. We were told about the products, how they are beneficial and much more. We got to try different oils so that we could tell which were natural and which were petroleum based. Interestingly one oil we tried was actually a well known product sold as a natural oil which in fact is far more petroleum based if you look at the ingredients.

We got to try lots of the lovely Weleda products and my arms and legs have never been so well fed with cream and oils. They also let us try some of their new products recently released and then told us what was about to be released later this year.

The ladies who did the talks were not only informative but we also so enthusiastic about the company, its ethics and the products that it was a real pleasure to see and share their excitement.

At the end of the day we had to go to their little shop to hand in our badges and be given a bag full of great products as well. Inside the bag was a voucher for 25% off so I felt it would be rude not to take advantage of that and treated myself to a full sized bottle of Birch cellulite oil and also a bottle of their new hayfever relief oromucosal spray as I do suffer from hayfever and would love not to have to take ant histamines daily all summer.

This was a fantastic day and I would like to thank Weleda for treating us to such a lovely welcoming and interesting day. I met a few other bloggers too and we all got on so well that I feel I have also made new friends as well.

Honey Honey How You Thrill Me

This is one of the newest of lush’s shampoos just released in the last few weeks and I couldn’t wait to try it. Whenever I hear of new products I have to restrain myself from rushing straight to Lush to get them.

A bit more about Lush's philosophy

Lush only buy ingredients from companies that do not test on animals. They invent their own products and fragrances and make everything fresh by hand. They use as little preservative and packing as possible. They put the date made on the product so you can see how fresh they are and they use vegetarian ingredients.

“We believe in happy people making happy soap, putting our faces on our products and making our mums proud.
We believe in long candlelit baths, sharing showers, massage, filling the world with perfume and in the right to make mistakes, lose everything and start again.
We believe our products are good value, that we should make a profit and that the customer is always right.
*We also believe words like 'Fresh' and 'Organic' have an honest meaning beyond marketing.” Lush UK. Read more

How much and What do you get?

This shampoo is sold in the usual clear Lush plastic recyclable squeezy bottles , the same ones that their shower gels come in. It comes in three sizes 110g for £7.00, 300g for £14.00 and for the very wealthy you can buy 600g for £23.50.
This is not a really thick shampoo but I still prefer the shampoos in the black screw top pots as I find them easy to get the product out of. The squeezy bottles are quite stiff and I find I have to keep them upside down towards the end as the stuff is hard to squeeze out. The plastic tubs also contribute towards a free face pack which these don’t, and with the black pots there is no waste as you get every last bit out.

“This bottle is full of the power of flowers, collected and concentrated for you by the bees. While they were collecting the pollen, we searched the meadows for beautiful flowers to fragrance their work.”

“With lashings of honey in here for its lovely effects on the hair – the natural properties of honey also means we didn’t need to put any preservative in this product.

A shampoo this good deserves the finest of perfumes. So Simon has created a geranium/honey perfume with beeswax absolute, geranium, rose, bergamot and neroli. This is a no expense spared shampoo.” Lush UK

For the vegans amongst you this has no animal products at all and is vegan friendly carrying the Vegan friendly symbol on its bottle label.

What you get is a golden coloured reasonably thick shampoo that smells strangely not of honey which I found odd considering that it is 50% honey. It smells sweet and slightly slightly floral which must be the neroli and rose oils. It isn’t the best scent I have ever smelled in a shampoo but it is perfectly pleasant and not offensive in any way to me. It is a much nicer scent that the Blousey shampoo in my view.

 My experience

I was really looking forward to using this one as I do dye my hair and am constantly aware that I must feed it with moisturising goodies in order to keep it in good condition because of using these rather harsh dyes.

I scooped out only a very small amount of this shampoo into my fingers from the black pot mine came in as mine was a generous sample from the lovely people in my local Lush shop. I massaged it into my wet hair. My hair isn’t long and I really need the smallest amount to get a lovely creamy lather.

The amount I used was two fingers dipped in the shampoo and I used what came out on my fingers. The scent is hard to describe and I really struggled to pick out any strong scents in this but it did give a really luxurious but light lather.

When I rinsed the shampoo out my hair felt almost squeaky clean which it doesn’t usually and I did feel that it needed conditioner. I wasn’t about to test drying my hair without having conditioned it so I can’t say what it would be like but it did feel very stripped clean when rinsed.

Update since writing that last bit and being the thorough reviewer that I am I decided to test the shampoo without conditioner. It does feel a bit drier and slightly less silky than I would normally like having dried it but it actually smells really nice as the rose and neroli essential oils come through quite strongly. I don’t think I would use it without a conditioner but it didn’t feel too dry and unfed afterwards so it can be done, if you have greasy hair then you may well get away with it but my hair is quite dry.

What have they added and Why?

Half of this product is Honey, Fair trade honey and only the best and so why is honey so important for hair that they put 50% in this shampoo?

Honey’s natural sweeteners nourish the hair and honey retains water and moisture, allowing it to hydrate hair whilst at the same time also providing copper, iron, manganese, calcium, sodium, potassium, phosphorous and Vitamin B.

Honey is also supposed to help with hair loss and itchy scalps. It is said that if you rub a mix of honey and cinnamon on your scalp for two or three minutes daily it will stimulate hair growth. I am not sure how true this is but if you suffer from thinning hair it might be worth a try.

You can also use honey as a shine treatment for hair. If you coat your hair with honey and leave it for ten minutes before washing as usual you will find that the honey works as a clarifying and conditioning treatment, leaving you with healthy and shiny hair. Read more

  • Linseed Mucilage creates a gel-like texture in the shampoo as well as benefitting the hair by adding the seeds’ vitamin and mineral content to the hair.
  • Sunflower Lecithin is good for healthy hair growth.
  • Geranium Essential Oil is thought to have a balancing effect on the nervous system, sebum production and circulation and is a natural antiseptic.
  • Beeswax Absolute is there for its soothing, protective and antiseptic properties benefitting both the scalp and hair.
  • Neroli is here for its scent and also it is “one of the few essential oils to be scientifically proven to increase serotonin production in the brain.” So a feeling of goodwill is created when this oil is smelled.
  • Rose Oil is great for its scent and it is perfect for dry rough skin so is here to feed and soothe the scalp as well as add scent.
  • Bergamot Oil is here for its antibacterial qualities and its acidity encourages the hair to lie flat, giving great shine and gloss to the hair.

What do I think of this?

I found it was a lovely shampoo to wash my hair with. It felt great while massaging it into my hair. When i rinsed it out I thought my hair felt rather stripped but after conditioning it and then drying it my hair was left with a lovely light feeling. It was quick to dry and easy to style, i dry my rather curly, frizzy hair straightish and it lay nicely and almost even looked shiny. My hair really never look s shiny because it is wavy but it did have a bit of a sheen as I dried it straightish and I loved the way it felt smooth, light and not weighed down at all.

I only wash my hair every second day and even on day two it still looked and felt good. I can’t say the smell of the shampoo did much for me, it didn’t smell sweet and honey like, more herby with a slight citrus sweet aroma.

I really recommend Lush for all the lovely things in this shampoo but I am disappointed to see that it does have Sodium Laureth Sulfate which I know you do need a surfactant but this has been considered controversial and there are other more natural ones that could be used.

I loved the shampoo but do think it is quite expensive for the amount you get. You do however only need a small amount so it may well work out as economical as a cheaper one in the long run. Write a review
