Weleda Skin Food

Description

Weleda Skin Food scooped Best Skincare Product in the Ethical Living Awards 2010. This product is a nourishing and hydrating treatment for the whole body, especially hands, feet and elbows. This marvellous intensive moisture cream is a backstage beauty secret and been around since 1926. Suitable for vegetarians.A deep-penetrating replenishing skin repair cream for dry patches of skin and for added winter protection. Ideal for skin that is dry, flaky and in need of extra care.
Made with organic sunflower seed oil, and extracts of wild pansy, chamomile, calendula and revitalising rosemary extract to perk up tired skin, it is a great rescue remedy for lack-lustre or generally undernourished complexions.
Skin Food is delicately fragranced with refreshing essential oils including sweet orange and lavandulae and is the natural choice for everyday care of the face and body.
It can be used as a protective cream in harsh weather and is excellent for anyone regularly out of doors.

Directions

A little goes a long way, so apply sparingly. This very rich cream is best applied to the face by gently patting on, so as to avoid dragging the skin. Elsewhere on the body, gently smooth into the skin until the cream is absorbed. To deeply nourish hard working, dry hands: apply liberally, cover with gloves and leave overnight.

Summary
I had a full sized Weleda Skin Food quite a while ago and used it completely, however recently I have got another chance to use it (as several samples) and thus refresh my experiences on the matter. The cream is rich and heavy-textured, more actually an ointment than a cream, but I think there is where its nourishing and moisturizing properties come from. It is white with a yellowish tint and has a medicinal smell reminiscent of that of marigold, which I guess not everyone will like, but it is ok for me. It is very economical in use, and merely a pea-sized amount will be enough for both elbows or both heels (those places were my favourites concerning the cream's 'designation'). It indeed is a great treatment against a dry skin (that I have plenty of) and manifests its beneficial influence in just 1-2 applications after the treated skin becomes suppler and feels moisturized. Its absorbing properties are rather poor so I mostly used it in the evening after the shower when I wasn't pressed for time. It is especially good in winter since my skin tends to be even drier then. Its universality is a good thing, but I recommend using it primarily on a body instead of a face or lips (unless you have a case of weather-beaten and cracked skin there) because it is greasy and (in terms of lips) not particularly tasty.

Summary
This product comes in a vintage style tube, similar to old tubes of toothpaste, it's metal and can be compacted down as the tube is emptied. It comes in brightly coloured packaging and the tube is easy to dispense. The cream is rich textured and creamy yellow in colour. It has a slightly oily texture which soothes dry, delicate and damaged skin. I have recently used it when I had eczema, when I was unable to use other moisturisers and skin products. My skin accepted the cream and was soothed by it. The cream has a very strong herby fragrance and moisturises well and for a long period of time. I am especially pleased that it helped improve my dry skin which was showing signs of an eczema outbreak.

I love Weleda products as they smell natural and really lovely. Their ethics and philosophy are to be admired. they put their effots into creating great products that are full of natural effective ingredients and add no chemicals or nasty preservatives.

This cream comes in a basic plastic tube which is fully recyclable. the cream is a little thicker than some of their others and does an excellent job on my dry elbows. I found it was really quickly absorbed and made my elbows feel soft and well nourished. i also found it was excellent on my cuticles as it stayed longer than some creams and when i applied it at night after a week my cuticles were so much softer.

It smells pleasant, slightly fresh and herby to me and not so strong that it fought with any perfume i wanted to wear.

Great stuff Weleda - loved it.

Strongest points
Easy to target the areas you want to soften
Weakest points
Off putting scent and the on skin layer effect isn't pleasant
Summary
First things first, the scent: for me there is an unpleasant metallic tang that just puts me off the moment I smell it. To be honest there is little transfer so it's not a big issue but I must admit it gets in the way when I'm using it. The crème is very heavy which is fine as it's meant to be and is designed for hard skin. I liked the texture as it means that you can target it precisely rather than just as a general moisturiser. But it does leave a strong barrier on the skin which is fine for the patches you're trying to soften but terrible on you hands as it just sits there. The effect is more of a treatment than anything in that you can feel the crème on your skin even after a while which is either okay or not depending on circumstances (fine at home but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable going to work with it on my skin. The impact was okay rather than great but it definitely impacts on hard skin it's just that the scent and application are poor.
