ointment for sore throat and sprained extremities
I have had a pot of Tiger Balm ointment in my house since 1970 when my parents lived in Malaysia.I find it excellent for colds and use some in hot water as an inhalant. I also find a little on the temples works to reduce stress headaches. It is also great rubbed on bumps to reduce bruising and massaged on muscles and backs as you would any muscle easing balm.It is a little like Vicks in that it can feel cold on the skin and also warm the skin. Beware though of getting it in eyes, cuts, broken skin or sensitive body bits as it stings and the sting lasts ages.
I was introduced to Tiger Balm many years ago whilst on a tropical holiday where there was a huge problem with mosquitoes. When the itching and pain became unbearable a member of hotel staff sourced this product for me. Until now it was only available abroad or in airports. This balm really is a miracle worker. It is made from 100% natural herbal ingredients including menthol, camphor, mint and clove oils. Each of these ingredients has a rapid and remarkable effect on the skin as natural painkillers. I have so many uses for this ointment and carry it with me on every holiday as well as having a pot at home.
The balm has a thick greasy texture and is white in colour. There is not much difference in effects to the red balm, however, the fragrance is slightly less potent and it does not stain light coloured clothing. I do find that the red balm is slightly stronger in effect on stings and bites than the white. The fragrance is extremely strong in a menthol way but do not be put off by this. Its uses and benefits far outweigh the scent! It has almost immediate effects once applied to the skin and I use this for the following:
1) Bites and stings – it relieves the itch and pain immediately whilst calming and healing the affected area
2) For headaches – applied to forehead and temples it almost immediately soothes the pain
3) For muscle pain, strains and bruises – when ,massaged into the skin it acts as a natural painkiller
4) For nasal congestion – a small amount applied to a handkerchief or in a hot water bath immediately decongests and unblocks the sinuses
You must always keep this product away from your eyes and broken skin but topically I have never found another product like it! The pot lasts for over a year with constant use and the single most used SOS product in our household. If you have never tried Tiger Balm and want a 100% natural alternative to drug based products I cannot recommend this highly enough!
