sugar plum Fairy scrub

Description

A seasonal scrub from Lush - pink and girly and usually appears at Christmas. " Our newest scrubber was inspired by the Tchaikovsky ballet. When Helen was inventing, she thought that plum kernel oil would work a treat because it moisturises the skin and makes it feel silky smooth and adds an almondy scent to the product."

Directions

I find it best to wet it a little then break bits off and squash a bit then use as a scrub. Keep in one of Lush's black pots after you have used a bit otherwise you end u with a soggy mess of dissolved sugar

This is one of the seasonal products that appear around Christmas every year or so. Unlike the other sugar scrubs this comes in a package with a plastic over lid and card bottom with all the product information on the cardboard part.

I got mine as part of a bulk purchase through a seller on ebay but have had them before direct from Lush. They are quite pretty with a hint of pink around the Fairy emblem embossed on the top fading to yellow at the base. For Lush aficionados this is the same size as their sugar scrub and sells for around the same price when it is around.

WHAT LUSH SAY

“This scrubber was inspired by the Tchaikovsky ballet. When Helen was inventing, she thought that plum kernel oil would work a treat because it moisturises the skin and makes it feel silky smooth and adds an almondy scent to the product.”

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR FAIRY

This scrub is scrubby because of the sugar in it. Obviously sugar dissolves in water so if you use the scrub whole you will be left with a handful of dissolving scented sugar which becomes useless after a while. I find that the best way is to dampen it then break off a small amount wet it until it become soft then scrub using this. If I need more I break a bit more off and repeat. I store what is left over in an old Lush pot or in a separate soap dish and it keeps reasonably for a week or so this way.

WHAT DOES A FAIRY SMELL LIKE?

This has not got a strong scent but does smell subtly sweet and orangey with a hint of almond and creaminess. It has also got vetivert in it but I have to be truthful and say it eluded me in this one and vetivert usually is pretty obvious. It is pleasant but not a product that I would buy for its scent alone. I prefer the scent of the original green sugar scrub that is around all year long.

WAHT ELSE DOES THE FAIRY HAVE IN IT?

Well apart from sugar for its scrubbiness it has bicarbonate of soda for softening the water and giving a creamy feel while using it. It also has cream of tartar, I have no idea why but in recipes it gives a creamy consistency in sugary things so maybe that is the job it does here. There is also  Plum Kernel Oil  which adds to the moisturising element of this scrub which I do like.

The scent comes from Vetivert Oil, Jasmine Absolute, Ylang Ylang Oil, Gardenia Extract and Orange Blossom Absolute all nice and natural and combining to give the sweet creamy aroma albeit it subtly in this.

Not so great we have Sodium Laureth Sulfate,  Cocamide DEA, Lauryl Betaine and Titanium Dioxide all of which are dubious in their safety. I would suggest if you have concerns about any that you do your own research into these. The Titanium Dioxide is there as it makes the sugar crystals shine like diamonds as it is so white and clear.

There are also colours in this product too which you can check if you are concerned or allergic to these.

If this had been a product from anywhere else I would not necessarily comment of the preservatives etc but as Lush claim to be all natural I do think they should look into these questionable ingredients and the use in their products.

Having said this the product is of course not tested on animals not are any of the ingredients and it is Vegan friendly too.

HOW DOES A FAIRY SCRUB UP THEN?

This is a good scrub if somewhat too scrubby at times. I found I had to crush mine up a bit as some of the sugar crystals were rather too sharp and crispy. When I got my mixture to the right consistency it worked very well, gave a nice scent and also because of the plum kernel oil in this I like the feeling of gentle moisturising I get from using this. My skin feels softer, smoother, more enlivened yet not at all tight and dry. When I get out and dry myself I feel really clean and toned as well as soft and moisturised.

RECOMMENDED?

Yes I think it is a nice scrub but I wouldn't get too disappointed if it didn't return as I love the other sugar scrubs made by Lush. At Christmas they produce different ones such as the Srcubby Santa, the Igloo and of course you can buy the green Sugar scrub year around and in my humble opinion that smells the best of the lot.
