Lush’s description : “ A witch’s cauldron of beautifying herbs and oils. But you must spit in the bathwater or the spell won’t work!”
WHY DID I BUY THIS?
This has to be one of Lush’s least attractive bath products. It is a solid cocoa butter cake shaped bath melt wrapped in muslin cloth and tied with a ribbon. Unlike other Lush bath products this one cannot be broken up and added to different baths. This one also hasn’t got a remarkably strong scent either. In fact I am being honest it isn’t one I would have bought myself but it came in a job lot I bought though Ebay so obviously I was not going to let it go to waste.
THE STORY

The story Lush tells once again is romantic and exotic ( if you can call Wales exotic). Ceridwen was an enchantress of Medeival Welsh legends who used her cauldron to make magic potions that granted the gift of wisdom and poetic inspiration. “ While we can’t claim that our humble cocoa butter cauldron will help you write a book of profound sage verse, it does calm, soothe, relieve and beautify your skin.”

“This product was inspired by all the herbal spells, natural medicine and Welsh mythology books that Mark was reading at the time. Mark wanted to recreate one of the beautifying spells - although the spell that he originally read did say that you should stir the bathwater seven times with a hazel wand and then spit in the water before getting in. We’ll leave that bit up to you!”?

THE PRODUCT
So this is a magical mixture inspired by Welsh legends but what is it really like?
The muslin wrapped cocoa butter lump weighs 80g and costs a whopping £3.99 hence my reluctance to buy this one! Because it is wrapped in cloth the aroma of the rose absolute oil is not really that noticeable when sniffing from outside the cloth. It doesn’t have no smell at all but the smell is pretty faint and certainly not one you would pick for its beauty or its scent.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THIS?
Firstly the oats are just about the most perfect ingredient for any irritated skin complaints. Aveeno creams use oat as their main ingredient for eczema and skin rashes. Doctors who believe in natural remedies often suggest bathing eczematic babies in water infused with oat milk. It is known that oats also contain avenanthramides which are a natural antibiotic produced by the plant and this acts as an antioxidant Oat milk made by infusing oats in hot water ( not boiling or you’ll get porridge) makes a wonderfully soothing effect and is also anti-inflammatory. Oat preparations helps to relieve itchy, irritated skin and also something I make use of a lot with my strange itchy skin as well as taking antihistamine tablets a bath in an oat infusion also helps as oats have antihistamines as well.
The cocoa butter and walnut oil are gentle skin balancing natural oils that help to nourish and moisturise your skin while relaxing in your gently fragrant bath. Cocoa butter comes from the cocoa bean and is not greasy like most other fats and oils. It is a hard consistency at room temperature but melts easily and most pleasantly smells like chocolate. Walnut oil is rich in vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids as well as a natural antiseptic, and is supposed to be good for helping many dry skin conditions such as eczema as well as being good for moisturizing skin geneally. It is also a light and pleasant smelling oil.

As well as these lovely skin nourishing ingredients this cauldron contains a variety of essential oils which not only smell lovely but each is added because of it aromatherapy benefits.

Tangerine essential oil is used in aromatherapy for stress relief, to improve the condition of the skin and to help insomnia.

Lavender essential oil is well known for its relaxation and anti stress benefits, It is also is a natural antiseptic, antibacterial, deodorising and relaxing so it is by far my favourite all round essential oil that I always have in my house. It is said to also help repair skin when burned so is used medicinally for burns, sunburn and also muscular pain like period pains.

Frankincense resinoid obtained from a tree is sticky and smells wonderfully exotic but is also good for, softening the skin and making fine lines look even less noticeable. It is good at helping repair sore, cracked, de-hydrated skins, it is supposed to help with eczema-prone, dry and mature skins.

Rose Absolute has to another of my favourite essential oils as it smells so wonderful and is also so gentle and balancing on sensitive dry mature skin. The smell is supposed to be an aphrodisiac but can’t say I have noticed that element. It is used in aromatherapy to help balance emotions and help with grief. I like it as it smells so great.

Sandalwood oil is another personal favourite for the smell alone. Apart from the lovely aroma sandalwood is used in skin care as it is a natural emollient working to soothe and soften the skin. It is particularly good at nourishing dehydrated and older skins and also will help with reducing inflammation.

Next we come to the flowers that have been added to this treat. Elderflower has long been used in folk medicine for all kinds of cures. All parts of the plant are used. Daisy flowers are used by herbalists to treat wounds, rheumatism, bronchitis, and kidney problems as well as healing and soothing skin problems. Cowslips are relaxing but are also used by herbalists for facial neuralgia, arthritic pain, skin blemishes, sunburn and migraine.

OKAY SO WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS?
You can either pop it into the bath as it is filling and allow the ingredients within to melt and infuse with the bath water. You can hold it under the tap as the bath water if filling , again allowing the ingredients to melt into the bath or you can wet the product and massage it over you while in the bath or shower and the cloth acts as a gentle exfoliant while then other ingredients do their work.

Personally I would use it in the bath otherwise the ingredients will simply go down the plughole when showering. I used mine for three baths. In between I put the soggy thing in a cup so that it didn’t make a mess until the next bath.
The bath water sort of goes cloudy but not in an unpleasant way, it was clean and cloudy if that makes sense but not coloured at all. The smell that came off once it began to melt was gentle and very pleasant, in no way overwhelming but the bathroom filled with a lovely combination of floral and exotic smells. I just love frankincense and rose so any product with these is always a winner for me.

The water felt nice and soft but not greasy at all while I was in there and when I got out and dried myself my skin felt nice and soft, not dry and tight at all.
When I finished mine and squeezed out all I could from the cloth I opened it to have a look and there was a mush of flowers and oats but no other ingredients had survived the three baths. I bet you could use the mush as a face mask if you wanted although maybe all the goodness had been washed out by then. It did make me think I should go and collect a few daisies from our lawn, grab some porridge oats, elderflowers from our hedgerows and I am sure I could find some cowslips too then grab a few rose petals and use my own essential oils and make my own cloth pot pourri or bouquet garni for the bath. I wouldn’t have the cocoa butter and walnut oil but I could add a bit of olive oil! There I have invented my own!
The bath did have a rim around the water line after I had emptied it but it did rinse out with hot water and it wasn’t slippery either which was good. After the three uses I did give the bath a good proper clean to remove any oily traces.

RECOMMENDED?
Yes it was very nice and quite novel but isn’t the prettiest of their products and in between uses it looks pretty soggy and ugly sitting in the container. I think it is expensive for what it is and that even being careful like I was three baths was probably the maximum so that is £1.30 ish per bath.

I do feel many of the benefits could be gained by a simpler version of oats and essential oils infused in a bath but you have to make a bit more effort for that yourself. In this one Lush have done all the work and all you have to do is enjoy

Strongest points
A wonderfully relaxing scent. Leaves skin soft and silky. Very soothing, and suitable for sensitive/dry skin.
Weakest points
Can take a while to dissolve in the bath. Leaves a residue, so the bath will need to be cleaned immediately after use.
Summary
A great bath melt. Slightly more expensive than many Lush bath-bombs, but still an affordable and luxurious treat.
